Search engine optimization (SEO) sure has changed over the years. SEO used to be solely about the keywords and keyphrases that we incorporated into a web page. We used to create pages based on specific keywords and optimize them. The content per page would be laser focused on these words, often making the readability awkward. Search engines are sophisticated. Everytime an SEO tactic was discovered to improve an organization’s organic results, the search engines would change their algorithms. Every day, the volume of content on the web grows, making it more competitive for sites to compete for coveted keywords. For example, let’s assume you own a shoe store and want to rank well for the keyphrase “shoe stores in Maryland” on Google. You will see that there are 164,000,000 results for that keyphrase. As professional digital marketers, we know that once you are below the first 5 organic results, your chances of people finding you diminish significantly. The mathematical odds of getting in the top five results is .00000003. Compare this to the odds of getting struck by lightning in your lifetime which is .000001.
