How to Secure Your Facebook Profile
We all love Facebook and how important it's become in the past several years, but that doesn't necessiarily mean that Facebook is completely safe. We've come up with several important tips that will help you stay safe and have fun while using facebook.
1. Make sure your profile is set to private
By default, Facebook profiles are now set to private. That means that photos, wall posts, and status updates are only seen by those in their network. However, it's still important to check and make sure whether you're profile is private or not.
You can find out more about Facebook's privacy settings here.
2. Be weary of new friend requests from people you don't know
Never heard of a person who friend requested you? No mutual friends? Don't bother. It's not worth it to allow a complete stranger to access all of you and your friends' personal information.
3. Check the URL
Phishing is a huge problem these days and is one of the leading reasons for hacked accounts. When browsing facebook, or installing an app, it's important to make sure that the URL bar begins with "http://facebook.com". If the URL does not start with "http://facebook.com" but still looks like facebook, do not enter any personal information and exit the browser.
4. Don't click on strange links
Malicious links are all over facebook so watch out. If someone posts on your wall or comments on a picture saying things like “LOL this is a funny picture of you [obscure url]” or “Bin laden death picture [obscure url]”, do not click it! It's most likely an application that steals sensitive information from your profile. Even worse, alot of these links will infect your profile, leading you to post tens if not hundreds of posts to your friend's walls, photo's, and statuses.
5. Be mindful of what information you share
Publically displaying sensitive information like your phone number or address may be risky, even when only sharing with your "friends". View your public info by going to your Facebook profile and selecting "info" under your profile picture.
