As 2016 comes to an end, many of you will be traveling from your home country to go on vacation.  Are you going to try to stay disconnected and shut down all of your devices?  If so, good luck with that.  Those of you who plan to stay connected, try to pay attention to how your internet experience is in other countries.  Is access to WIFI easier or more difficult? Are the speeds and performance comparable to what you are used to?  This exercise is just for fun, but you may find it interesting to see how good you have it at home or if online life is better elsewhere.

To participate in my silly experiment, you can test your internet performance at home, work and perhaps your favorite “third place” (like a Starbucks) by following these simple instructions:

  1. Download the free version of the SpeedTest app on your mobile device
  2. Make sure your phone is connected to your home/work/third place wifi and click begin test.
  3. When completed, the test will provide you with both the download and upload speeds.

Repeat these steps for every connection you test both home and abroad.

I welcome any insights you gain from this experiment.  You can either email me at mike@webconnection.com or leave a comment here.  Please make sure to include your home country and the country you visited in your comments.
